We ALL need some time out 🙂I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for anything outdoors. A good tent, a cosy glamping pod, or a shepherd’s hut tucked away in nature. So when Cat from Sycamore & Stars kindly offered us a complimentary night’s stay, I only had to think about it for a nanosecond 😀Let me introduce you to Badgers Sett, their beautiful shepherd’s hut nestled on the edge of an enchanted woodland. There's fungi at your feet, and a hefty selection of birds above, oh, and a resident pair of tawny owls keeping watch 🦉The hut looks out across open fields, and every so often a plane from Humberside drifts overhead. Not often enough to disturb the peace, as they are few, but it really adds to the experience.Next to the hut lies a wildflower meadow, complete with a contemplation bench perfect for sitting, thinking, or simply being. Inside, it’s clear Cat and Alex have thought of everything as every detail is done with care. And the wood fired hot tub tucked away in the trees? Pretty darn special 👍It’s only about 25 minutes from Grimsby, so if you’re local, it’s the perfect quick escape.Cat and Alex gifted us the stay as a thank you for connecting them with the walking group and for my river work, which fits with their ethos of nature, restoration, and calm.Myself and Mrs Canoe were really grateful as it was exactly the midweek reset we needed (even if getting the kids shipped out was a mission in itself!).If you’re looking for somewhere special, book Badgers Sett, or treat someone to a Christmas voucher. You won’t be disappointed. 🌿🛶Sycamore and Stars Off Grid Retreat #wellbeing #timeout #outdoors #nature ... See MoreSee Less

They can't build next to our lovely river 😳Most of you who know me, and my network of lovely friends, will know of the Grimsby West development, which will potentially see over 3000 houses littered around our river, rare chalk stream and unique blow wells. From an aesthetic perspective, it's not going to be a delight, but for me it's decades of disturbance which will drive the wildlife away from one of the most biodiversity rich nature corridors in the county. Apart from the odd section which you would have to circumnavigate or gain permissions, you can almost walk from source to sea enjoying a myriad of wildlife as you go, from kingfishers to barn owls, and from water vole to warblers, oh, and not forgetting our elusive otter 🦦None of us do well with disturbance, yet we have the ability to put our hands over our ears or turn the car stereo up. Most other non-human animals will simply disappear for good, or at least, my lifetime. It's fair to say that my nature walks/talks upstream are enjoyed by a fair few. It's also fair to say that im no expect. I let nature do the talking. My job is to connect people to that nature, but very soon my soundtrack will be gone.My dream? For this land to be bought by a progressive and forward thinking farmer who will increase the width of the corridor by NOT having his crop right next to our river. They will work with the community and a team of willing volunteers to reinstate hedgerows, plant wildflowers on large buffers around the watercourse to increase biodiversity and protect against soil and nutrient runoff. I'm prattling on far too much now, but if you have got this far I urge you to click this 👉 Save the Freshney Valley - Say no to Grimsby West and see the incredible work of Lyndsey Downes and the dedicated team of supporters (well done for last night).Thank you for readingJim 🛶 ... It's Not Gonna Be An Easy Goodbye 😪 🦢(The Boulevard Eight)Due to our above average reed infestation this year, these little toerags have invariably been closer to the boat, as we both try and navigate our uncharacteristically narrow river Freshney.I wouldn't ever go as far to say that they love me, but they most certainly trust and tolerate me, which is absolutely all you can expect from a wild animal, especially when you're in their territory. We've already seen the stretching of wings from the youngsters, and the nibbling of the apron strings by mum and dad, so it will only be a matter of weeks before we see test flights, and then it will be on to new pastures 🌿 🦢Please enjoy some family photos (in no particular chronological order)I'm gonna miss em 💚P.S.Whilst I appreciate that there is some frustration with the vegetation on our watercourse, I am of the understanding that the issue is countrywide. I suspect that's the reason for the delay and patchy approach on our riverFreshney Comrades;tHaith'sg North East Lincolnshire Council's North East Lincolnshire Council ... See MoreSee Less

Treasure in a field, litterpicking in Bradley, and a video shoot 🎥We had quite an eventful morning on the tools today! The team and I were roped into a video shoot celebrating Centre4’s 30th anniversary, which added a bit of extra sparkle to our usual routine. There was lots of stuff going on, but im hoping we get a few seconds screen time 🙂After our last litterpick, where we seemed to collect everything but the kitchen sink (and about a million bags of rubbish), I decided we needed a more balanced approach. While we love giving back to the community and the environment, these sessions are just as much about catching up, chatting.......and sharing a few biscuits afterwards 😇So, our new 'business model' is a half and half. A short relaxing walk and natter first, followed by a bit of litterpicking on the way back 👍This week we wandered from Centre4 to the charming Bradley Village, stopping off at St George’s Church along the way. The path was lined with conkers, clearly untouched, so it seems kids aren’t too fussed about collecting them these days! 🤣On the way back the gang picked litter all the way back to Centre4 and I found a few bits of vintage litter, that probably excited me more than they should have and 'Treasure' might be a generous term, but it definitely made the cleanup a bit more interesting.1985 KP Nuts !!!If you fancy joining us next time, we’ll be out again next Tuesday at 10am, details to follow. Come for the walk, the company, and maybe even a biscuit or two!Centre4 P.S. Massive thanks to Zac PickWalks for meeting up with us to drop off our kit, despite having other commitments 👍 ...
