Monday Funday With An Otter Cub!
Not ALL Mondays are bad, and this was probably one of the best I’ve spent in a long while, in the company of this young lady.
On behalf of the people at the Uk Wild Otter Trust I collected an orphaned otter cub from the fabulous Julie Smith at Wildline Sanctuary, and transported her to the equally fabulous people at the Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital.

Rehabilitation
The little button will have a thorough check over before she takes up residency at the Trust. There she will be cared for in the the best possible way to eventually be released after approximately one year, into the wild, with the necessary skills to survive on her own.

The Uk Wild Otter Trust
Dave Webb and the team do a fantastic job at the trust……
‘We’re often called upon to help with orphaned, injured and rescued otter cubs that have been found alone and in need of care. Looking after otter cubs is a specialist endeavour and there are few organisations in the UK able to carry out this work. We have to replicate the mother’s natural behaviour with the cubs – and this means that we have each cub for at least a year. We spend time teaching it to hunt, swim, play, fight, and, importantly, how to be a wild otter! This is a very hands-off and complex process, as we can’t afford to let a cub become humanised or imprinted’

Otters are apex predators and if they are on the river it generally signifies that the watercourse is in pretty good shape from a biodiversity perspective. It means that the food chain below is sufficient, and working well enough to support them.
